Can I mess up your picture?

First of all, my thanks and appreciation to all who took part in our ‘The God Who Breaks Through’ celebration, both to those on stage and those behind the scenes. You worked so hard and the result was excellent.

And yet … I have a sense that we were looking for even more in the way of God breaking into our lives through that meeting than we have yet seen. I know that I was – and the potential was there – yet I missed it.

PaintingDuring the meeting, I would frequently look across at the artist working on her painting. At first it seemed to have no particular direction – just a lot of multicoloured vertical stripes, sometimes light, sometimes dark, that didn’t make much sense to me. But as the meeting progressed, the lines began to curve until they started to resemble the shape of an eye with a dark centre. It was at that point that I got the sense that this was a portal between the natural and the supernatural; and as the artist began to increase the size of this feature I got this wonderful picture of a white dove flying out of that portal, from the unseen world of heaven into our own realm.

At that point she stopped painting for a time; and I was left thinking, ‘Has she seen what I see? Is she going to draw this?’ But at that time I never thought to go and speak to her – I felt it would be impudent of me to suggest to her what she should draw.

But when she returned to the task, she gradually closed up the portal, and then began to work on another painting. Yet the picture of the dove would not leave me. I began to imagine myself as the artist attempting to draw this – yet knowing that my own skills were mostly limited to rough sketches and computer graphics. In the end, I went over, told her what I had seen and she was obviously delighted. So I said to her something like, “I can’t draw this, but perhaps you can…” But by now, the meeting was approaching its close, and she was busy working on the new design.

I’ve been meditating on this incident. What would have happened if others had seen the dove emerge, where and how did I miss it, and what does it mean for us now?

I can’t answer the first question: but I can at least partially answer the second two. I missed it twice: firstly in not being sensitive enough that realise that God was prompting me to go and share what I had seen; and secondly in being too scared to ask the artist, ‘Do you mind if I mess up your picture?’ – and then attempting to use an unfamiliar medium to portray what I felt God was saying.

And that, I think, is also what God is saying through this: that in order for God to break through fully into our lives, we need to be more sensitive to His leading: because when he breaks through it will be in unexpected ways. It will take us out of our comfort zones and natural abilities and really mess up our carefully-drawn pictures.
